Barber Endorses Kirkpatrick for Congress
(Tucson) – Ron Barber, the Tucson Democrat who represented this community in Congress from 2012 to 2015, has thrown his support behind Ann Kirkpatrick in the race for Congress in Arizona’s second district.
“After meeting with dozens of candidates, community leaders and activists about this race, I‘ve made my choice: Ann Kirkpatrick,” said Barber, who has lived in Tucson since 1959. “Southern Arizona families need a champion, and Ann’s got the heart and the policies to be that champion. She showed political courage in voting for the Affordable Care Act at a time when many others were too scared to do the right thing.”
Barber, who served as district director for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords from 2007 to 2012, has been a voice in Southern Arizona’s progressive politics since he led the University of Arizona Young Democrats in the 1960s. He and his wife Nancy raised their family in Tucson, where they ran a mom-and-pop business.
“I’m thrilled to have Ron’s support as we build a campaign to put a check on Donald Trump’s reckless policies,” said Kirkpatrick. “Right now, with Representative McSally voting for Trump’s harmful agenda 97% of the time, it is clear that we need a stronger voice in Congress, someone who will protect health care and Social Security for Southern Arizona families, and look out for people who aren’t millionaires.”
Ann Kirkpatrick is a lifelong Arizonan who has served her community as public school teacher, prosecutor and Congresswoman. She had the courage to vote for the Affordable Care Act when others in Congress put their careers ahead of their communities. As a result of that vote, millions more Americans have affordable health coverage, including hundreds of thousands of Arizonans who would otherwise be left behind.
Ann is a graduate of the University of Arizona, and the U of A Law School. She has worked as a prosecutor in the Pima County Attorney’s office. She and her husband Roger live in Tucson, near their children and grandchildren.
Ann is running for Congress because Martha McSally has betrayed Southern Arizona by voting for a disastrous health care repeal that takes health coverage away from 24 million Americans. McSally has marched in lockstep with Donald Trump every step of the way, voting to de-fund Planned Parenthood, to erode a woman’s right to choose, to weaken protections for our environment and to let big corporations sell your online data.
