Ann Kirkpatrick Releases Statement on AZ-02 Primary Election Victory

(Tucson, AZ) – This evening, Ann Kirkpatrick was declared the winner of the Democratic primary and will represent the party in the general election for Arizona’s Second Congressional District House seat.

The Second District’s Congressional races have been historically competitive, with the seat flipping between Democrats and Republicans in recent years.

“Arizonans know how important it is to have an independent thinker, experienced legislator and accessible appropriator working for them in Washington. I’m so thankful for our voters, campaign staff and volunteers who helped land us an overwhelming victory tonight,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick.

“I am running because our American values are under attack — from healthcare to immigration and from climate change to financial security, Washington is putting massive corporations first instead of focusing on what matters to everyday families.

“Even during a global health crisis, the GOP has routinely and unapologetically attacked health care coverage for millions of Americans. These recent events have only renewed my commitment to saving and expanding our healthcare system. We can’t sit idly by as medical costs skyrocket. We must implement policies that grant every American high-quality, accessible healthcare.

“Southern Arizonans know that our border is one of our greatest assets. They know that migrant families shouldn’t be separated and DACA recipients should be protected. Our border and our relationship with Mexico are economic drivers, not hateful and divisive issues. Trump’s nefarious immigration policies go against our values, and I am unafraid to fight back. Our border and national security should be smart and humane.

“As we face some of the hardest economic and social challenges in our country’s history, I am so grateful that Southern Arizonans trust me to continue the work we’ve started,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick.

“With the primary behind us, the fight for AZ-02’s soul is really just beginning. With Trump at the top, fractions of the right have gone off the deep-end and pose a real threat to our republic as we know it. Southern Arizona is not exempt from this influence — we are seeing it in our opponent’s platform,” said campaign spokeswoman Arielle Devorah

“Southern Arizonans cannot afford to elect a representative who endangers their health care, promotes divisive immigration policy, undermines science, and makes empty promises to hard-working Arizona families. AZ-02 deserves an independent thinker and true representative, not a Trump lackey. That’s why from now until Election Day, we are ramping up our campaign efforts, sharing the facts, and focusing on the issues that impact Arizonans. We hope the community will join us in this fight.”

“Serving Arizona has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I will do everything I can to continue to advocate for our robust defense industry, borderland communities, and working families,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick.

Ann Kirkpatrick has defended women’s reproductive rights in rural areas where families’ health services are often neglected. She has received continued support from women’s groups during her previous time in the House, and has been a key figure in the fight to protect health care funding from the GOP’s dangerous attacks.
